Our client, Serjeants’ Inn Chambers, is a modern, award-winning set. It specialises in a wide range of medical, police, professional discipline & regulatory, business & specialist crime, inquest, inquiries and public law work, often involving important legal, ethical and social issues.
Chambers has 87 barristers and 24 members of staff. Over the last 10 years it has expanded its silk team from 9 to 25 KCs (with 3 more to be appointed in March, and including 9 women), recruited 40 new tenants and won 49 awards. Chambers holds the Bar Council’s Certificate of Excellence in Well-Being and has won a series of ED&I and Pro Bono awards. The Staff Team has worked effectively on a hybrid basis since 2021.
Chambers is described by The Legal 500 as a “stand-out set with a first-class team”: its success stems directly from the calibre of the barristers and staff alike.
The Role
To manage the day-to-day running of barristers’ practices and to have responsibility, with other clerking team members, for the development of members’ highly specialist practices.
To support business development and marketing activities for defined practice areas and for the enhancement of Chambers’ profile in the market, including the development of client relationships.
The role is integral to the efficient and effective functioning of the team. It is extremely busy and demanding and requires a highly motivated and driven individual with strong interpersonal skills, organisation and administration skills, and the ability to multi-task and prioritise. It also requires excellent team-player skills.
Duties include:
- Ensure that the clerks’ room is considered “best in class”, offering a proactive, dynamic and efficient service to all members of chambers (and specifically barristers within the team’s area of responsibility), solicitors and other professional clients (with attention to detail and proper process)
- Supervise and mentor more junior clerking team members
- Work collaboratively with barristers and colleagues in the clerking and Client Care teams to support the activities of Chambers’ practice groups, including preparation for practice group meetings, reviewing and analysing relevant financial data, implementing objectives and strategies as set by business plans and supporting relevant marketing activities
