Our client is a leading set of Barristers’ Chambers based in the North West of England, specalising in Family, Civil and Criminal Law. Chambers has an exceptional and growing team of 42 family counsel, including two leading counsel, who are instructed across the Northern Circuit in public and private children cases and finance and property cases. Chambers is now seeking an experienced family clerk to join its clerking team in Preston.

The Role:

The role works closely with the Practice Manager and other colleagues to ensure the smooth running of Chambers, offer appropraite support for members and their practices, and deliver a highly efficient service to a broad range of Chambers’ clients. To secure the most appropriate person, Chambers welcomes applications from those already working as Clerks and those working in similarly fast-paced environments with transferable skills.

Duties include:

  • Act as a point of contact for all clients and prospective clients relevant to the clerking team
  • Advise solicitors and other clients or prospective clients on appropriate counsel, their availability and levels of fees as applicable.
  • Resolve day to day problems, including moving cases for barristers’ convenience and returning straightforward matters.
  • To obtain and record information from Counsel on the outcome of court work/conferences/paperwork.
  • To report new business opportunities to the Practice Manager and participate in events and initiatives as required.
  • To assist in the development and maintenance of relationships with a network of key contacts in the legal services market who have the potential to provide new business or increase existing business
  • To adhere to Chambers’ policies as noted in the Chambers Handbook, in particular the equality and diversity policy to ensure the fair distribution of work, the health and safety policy and the confidential use of information.
  • Carry out any other delegated duties considered appropriate.

The Person

Suitable candidates will ideally have a track record working in a similarly reputable Barristers’ Chambers and experience using diary management systems, and a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of managing the practices of barristers. Applications from candidates who are working in similarly fast-paced environments with transferable skills will also be considered.

The successful candidate will be meticulously organised, trustworthy, and hardworking and have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, at all levels within Chambers, with clients and other outside organisations.
