Our client is a leading commercial barristers’ chambers, widely recognised for excellence across construction, engineering, energy, infrastructure and international disputes. Chambers is regularly instructed on complex, high-value and high-profile matters, supported by leading practitioners and a collaborative, professional and highly regarded support team.
Chambers is seeking to appoint a Practice Manager to join its established clerking team. This is a key position supporting the ongoing management, development and growth of members’ practices.
Reporting to the Senior Practice Manager and working closely with the Director of Clerking, Senior Clerk, other members of the PM team, and the COO, the successful candidate will play a central role in practice management of members, client relationship development, fee negotiation and team leadership, while helping to drive the continued success and reputation of chambers.
Key Responsibilities
- Proactive management of barristers’ diaries, ensuring smooth coordination of commitments
- Liaising with solicitors, clients and courts to secure and progress instructions
- Monitoring workloads and capacity, ensuring effective allocation of work
- Listing and fixing hearings, organising conferences and related commitments
- Supporting practice development through regular review meetings with members
- Quoting, negotiating and agreeing fees, advising on appropriate commercial arrangements
- Assist the Director of Clerking and the Head of Marketing with marketing initiatives
- Attend internal and external events
- Building and maintaining strong external and internal relationships
- Market awareness: Competitor analysis and regularly review legal press
- Supporting and mentoring junior team members within the practice management function
Candidates will (ideally) have a minimum of 4 years’ experience within a barristers’ chambers or similar professional services environment. They will be highly personable, demonstrate strong commercial awareness, excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with clients and stakeholders. Highly organised and proactive, they will be confident managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, with experience in diary management, fee negotiation and supporting the development of barristers’ practices.
