Our Client, Keating Chambers, is a leading set of commercial barristers’ chambers, with a thriving domestic and international practice, comprising 74 barristers (including 33 King’s Counsel), and 4 international members. Its barristers specialise in providing services across the areas of construction and engineering; energy and natural resources; infrastructure and utilities; international arbitration; IT and technology; offshore construction and marine engineering; procurement and competition, planning and environment and associated professional negligence.
Following a period of sustained growth, an opportunity has arisen for a Practice Manager to join its highly regarded practice management team.
The Role
The Practice Manager will sit within one of Chambers’ Practice Management teams. Each Practice Management team has overall responsibility for the practice and caseload of a cohort of barristers and is the professional link between barristers and their clients, to ensure that their team delivers a dynamic, proactive and efficient service to those members of Chambers and clients, managing new instructions from start to finish. As part of that, they work with other Practice Managers and the Senior Practice Managers to ensure that the teams are working collaboratively and that key information is consistently communicated. They will also work closely with the marketing team to support business development initiatives and relevant marketing activities.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Offering a proactive and efficient service to members of Chambers, solicitors and other professional clients
- Diary and practice management
- Developing a sound knowledge of Chambers’ areas of practice and the practices of individual members
- Conducting practice development meetings with members of Chambers to agree career targets and deliver a long-term approach to practice development
- Supervision of allocated junior members of the clerking team
- Undertaking business development and marketing activities to support Chambers in delivering its client relationship strategy
- Identifying opportunities to promote Chambers and individual barristers’ practices
- Providing estimates and quotations for work and negotiating and assessing fees in conjunction with colleagues
- Ensuring accurate data is captured in Chambers’ online practice management system to support effective reporting
The Candidate will ideally:
- Be highly organised and commercially minded with strong interpersonal skills and sound judgement.
- Possess business development skills and negotiation skills, along with a commitment to client service standards.
- Have excellent listening skills and the ability to act as a trusted point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
- Be adaptable and accustomed to working in a fast-paced, professional environment while staying on top of the detail and ensuring excellent day-to-day support to a busy team.
- Be adept at managing fast-changing workloads while working collaboratively with other teams.
- Bring a proactive, solutions-focused approach to their role.
The successful candidate is likely to have a track record working in a similarly reputable barristers’ chambers and be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the requirements of managing barristers’ practices and experience in marketing and business development. Experience of one or more of Keating Chambers’ key industry sectors will be an advantage but is not essential.
Candidates must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to build relationships across all levels, including senior management and clients. Discretion and resilience in high-pressure situations are critical, as is a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation. They will also demonstrate knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements.
