(802) Civil Practice Manager Leading Barristers’ Chambers (Birmingham)

Our client is a leading set of Barristers’ Chambers with offices in the East Midlands and West Midlands, specialising in Family, Crime and Civil (including Housing and Business and Property). They are a multidisciplinary set with a large number of barristers, including King’s Counsel, and a highly regarded and friendly practice management team and support staff. They are recognised for their commitment to diversity, equality, and wellbeing. Chambers is now seeking an experienced Civil Practice Manager to join its team in Birmingham.

The Role:

This senior position, works closely with the Chambers Director and other colleagues to offer, through effective Clerking, Practice Management and Marketing, the highest-quality service to internal and external clients so that chambers produces maximum and sustainable profit each year and the risks to the business are identified and addressed.

Duties include:

  • Significant client/solicitor engagement
  • Agree on fees for appropriate cases by the day before the case at the latest and liaise in major or complicated cases.
  • Ensure that the Practice team is fully accountable for the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of all the cases in the Practice.
  • Induct new barristers.
  • To take responsibility for other Practice teams within the Clerks’ room in the absence of other Practice Managers and exercise flexibility to assist other areas.
  • Work alongside the Marketing and Events Officer on all business development activities via Management Team and Business Development meetings.
  • Performance management – Carrying out appraisals, ensuring appropriate training and development plans are designed, agreed and carried out.
  • To carry out all duties in a professional and courteous manner with an understanding of the impact of actions and attitudes on colleagues, and internal and external clients.
  • Adhere to all staffing and organisational policies ensuring avoidance of inappropriate presidents.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in line with Chambers’ Equality and Diversity Policies.

 Person Specification

  • Circa 5 years’ experience of clerking or equivalent experience gained in civil law, including diary management, and liaising with solicitors and court staff.
  • A high level of numeracy and literacy, (a Degree or equivalent/Legal qualification is desirable but isn’t essential).
  • Strong commercial awareness, with the desire to build and grow the team and the quality of work for the team
  • Experience negotiating fees
  • Ability to balance pressures from conflicting clients’ needs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong prioritisation and communication skills
