Our client, Serjeant’s Inn Chambers, is a leading civil law Barristers’ Chambers specialising in high-profile medical, police, professional discipline, regulatory, business & specialist crime and public law cases, often involving important legal, ethical and social issues.

Members of its award-winning staff team play a vital part in the success of the set and Chambers is seeking a bright, highly motivated individual to join their Practice Management Team.  Chambers has an excellent record of developing its staff and promoting from within.

The Role

To manage the day-to-day running of barrister’s practices and to have responsibility with other staff team members for the development of all members’ highly specialist practices.

To support business development and marketing activities for defined practice areas and for the enhancement of Chambers’ profile in the market, including the development of client relationships.

The role is integral to the efficient and effective functioning of the team. It is extremely busy and demanding and requires strong inter-personal skills, organisation and administration skills, and the ability to multi-task and prioritise.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring that the clerking function provides an effective and efficient service to all members of Chambers (and specifically barristers within the team’s area of responsibility), solicitors and other professional clients at all times.
  • All aspects of diary management eg fixing hearings (in all divisions), conferences, recording of deadlines and advising solicitors of counsel’s availability.
  • Fielding, dealing with and delegating enquiries, agreeing contracts and case management on the Bar Squared (Lex) management system and the generation of reports from this system as required.
  • Contributing to practice development meetings with members to establish a progressive and effective, long-term approach to practice development, career targets (eg Silk and Panel Appointments) and wellbeing.
  • Liaising with and working alongside the Client Care team to support the activities of Chambers’ practice groups and implement Chambers’ objectives and strategies and participating relevant BD and marketing activities.
  • Building strong relationships with clients across all Chambers’ practice areas.

The Person

Suitable candidates will have a significant track record working in a similarly reputable Barristers’ Chambers (2+ years), ideally with an understanding of the requirements of managing the practices of barristers in Clinical Negligence and associated areas of law. You will also have knowledge of the compliance and regulatory aspects relevant to working in a Barristers’ Chambers. This client facing role also requires an understanding and previous experience in marketing and business development initiatives and processes.
