The role

Chambers is now seeking a highly motivated individual to become its first Director of Clerking to lead the clerking and practice management functions. The role provides strategic direction and hands-on leadership to drive Chambers’ growth and success. The Director of Clerking will work closely with Directors, members, and clients to lead business development, oversee the clerking function and further enhance Chambers’ reputation. They are expected to play a key role in shaping a modern, ambitious Chambers.

Leadership/Clerking/Practice Management

  • Lead, manage, and mentor the clerking team.
  • Oversee practice development, aligning with members’ aspirations.
  • Ensure the fair and transparent allocation of work, operational efficiency and high standards of client service.
  • Negotiate and secure competitive fees that reflect members’ expertise.
  • Oversee effective processes and case administration.

Business Development/Marketing/Client Relations

  • Drive strategic business growth, identifying opportunities to expand practice areas and client reach.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with solicitors, legal teams, and key stakeholders.
  • Represent Chambers and its members at key industry events, reinforcing Chambers reputation as a leader in the legal profession.
  • Support recruitment initiatives to attracting high-calibre barristers.

Operations

  • Assist in financial planning and budgeting, ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability.
  • Support the development of Chambers operations functions and ensure these are effective and fit for purpose.

Communications

  • Foster an open, transparent, and inclusive culture to ensure effective communication both inside and outside Chambers.
  • Ensure that Chambers’ core values consistently guide all actions and decisions.
  • Actively gather and respond to feedback and insights from current and potential clients.

 The person

With a demonstrable record of success in a clerking role in a similarly successful and fast-paced environment, they will also be:

  • Ambitious, committed and with the ability to lead, manage and inspire others.
  • Experienced in leading teams and driving strategic growth.
  • Commercially minded with the ability to identify and develop new opportunities.
  • Capable of working closely with barristers to develop practices and work streams.
  • Able to strengthen existing partnerships and attract and secure new work.
  • Able to communicate effectively at multiple levels and with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledgeable and have a detailed understanding of the legal market and the change and opportunities driving it.
