Our Client, Serjeants’ Inn Chambers, is a modern, award-winning set. It specialises in a wide range of medical, police, professional discipline & regulatory, business & specialist crime, inquest, inquiries and public law work, often involving important legal, ethical and social issues.
Chambers has 81 barristers and 26 members of staff. Over the last 10 years it has expanded its silk team from 9 to 25 KCs, recruited 45 new tenants and won 54 awards. Chambers holds the Bar Council’s Certificate of Excellence in Well-Being, and has won a series of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion awards. The Staff Team has worked effectively on a hybrid basis since 2021.
Chambers is described by The Legal 500 as a “stand-out set with a first-class team”: its success stems directly from the calibre of the barristers and staff alike.
The Role
In advance of the retirement of Chambers’ current Senior Clerk (after more than 40 successful years at the set), Chambers is now seeking a dynamic Director of Clerking/Senior Clerk to lead the clerking team. They will combine classic clerking skills with modern business acumen and a strong work ethic. They will take a decisive and confident but sensitive and astute approach to drive the delivery of a stellar clerking service for both barristers and clients. They will play a hands-on role in Chambers’ clerking, leading from the front to maximise the key contribution that clerking plays in Chambers’ success. They will apply expertise and experience at both a practical and a strategic level to ensure that the day-to-day clerking function not only runs smoothly but promotes the Staff Team Values and advances Chambers’ business objectives.
As part of the Senior Management Team, they will also actively contribute to the growth and progression of Chambers more broadly, identifying opportunities for individual members and Chambers as a whole, and assisting with business development.
Reporting to and working closely with the CEO on all aspects of the role, in accordance with the direction of the joint Heads of Chambers on behalf of tenants overall, the Director of Clerking/Senior Clerk role offers the opportunity to make a real difference in a friendly and sophisticated set which deals with some of the most interesting litigation in England and Wales today.
