The Candidate:
Chambers now seeks to appoint a highly suitable individual to the role of Practice Manager to assist with the efficient running of the highly regarded Practice Management team, which was recently recognised by the Clerking Team of the Year in the Legal 500 Bar Awards. The successful candidate will ideally have a minimum of 5 years experience working in a similarly successful, leading civil law Chambers. Key responsibilities will include:
Clerking/Practice Management
- Provide an excellent standard of service to barristers and their professional clients; develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge of their practices and practice areas.
- Negotiate professional fees for barristers’ work with clients, including agreement of brief fees (with reference to SPM as needed). Prompt billing of fees for allocated barristers
- Accurate, efficient and pro-active diary management to maximise members’ time (dealing with issues arising)
- Organise and take the lead in formal Practice Development Meetings (PDM) with barristers
- Support the Senior Practice Manager (SPM) by taking ownership and responsibility for delegated tasks or projects
Business Development & Marketing
- Identify opportunities for cross-selling work across chambers
- Establish trusted relationships with members and explore opportunities to expand their network of clients
- Actively promote chambers and seek out business development opportunities with existing and potential clients
- Attend business development meetings with clients as directed by the SPM and Chambers Director (CD)
- Maintain market awareness of developments affecting chambers’ practice areas (including competitor analysis) and opportunities for work creation
- Assist with or take the lead as directed, in planning and delivery of marketing/client events
- Attend marketing and other business development activities (including out-of-hours)
- Utilise LinkedIn to share appropriate content and increase chambers’ visibility and brand
Operational
- Attend and contribute to clerk’s team and staff team meetings
- Where necessary, participate in other working or project groups that may be formed
- Maintain good relationships within the staff team; and provide appropriate support, mentoring and development of junior colleagues
- Have joint responsibility for supervising the Assistant Practice Manager (APM) and Junior Clerk (JC) in the absence of the SPM
Key Skills & Experience
- Education to A level/IBC/equivalent diploma course
- 5+ years’ experience in another Civil Chambers would be an advantage (not a pre-requisite)
- Highly organised and efficient, with excellent accurate written and verbal communication skills
- Highly personable, ability to engage with clients and barristers at all levels
- Confident and articulate, comfortable “selling” barristers and networking
- Highly self-organised, motivated and proactive in completing tasks and managing a busy “to-do” list
- Ability to multi-task and handle a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines and conflicting priorities
- Ability to handle high-pressure situations
