GRL Sponsors and Attends the IBC Annual Conference

GRL was proud to sponsor the IBC Annual Conference, held on Saturday, 18th November 2023, at the Kimpton Fitzroy in London. This event brought together industry leaders and professionals to discuss key issues and advancements in the legal sector under the theme: “It’s all about the people – navigating a career in a people-focused profession.”

Key Takeaways from the Conference

Insights on Neurodivergence

One of the most impactful sessions was led by Leanne Buckley-Thomson, a neurodivergent barrister from No 5 Chambers. Her workshop delved into the realities of practicing law as a neurodivergent individual, shedding light on conditions such as ADHD and Autism. Attendees gained a better understanding of the challenges faced by neurodivergent barristers and discussed practical adjustments to support their success, fostering a more inclusive environment within the legal profession.

Embracing AI with Chat GPT

Another highlight was the session on the role of AI in the modern legal profession, presented by Rowan Caffull from 36 Group and Bernard Savage from 10 ½ Boots. They showcased how Chat GPT can enhance a clerk’s capabilities by improving marketing, practice management, and business development efforts. This session emphasized that AI is an enhancement tool rather than a replacement, offering a significant upgrade for clerks’ skill sets.

Career Navigation in a People-Focused Profession

The central theme of the conference, “It’s all about the people,” was echoed in various sessions throughout the day. Nicholas Vineall KC, the Chair of the Bar, contributed to an open forum filled with topical discussions and advice. Bernard Savage’s headline presentation was particularly energising, providing new approaches to business development that attendees found highly engaging and useful.

Afternoon Focus: Diverse Career Paths

The afternoon sessions covered a range of topics, including navigating the property ladder, sponsored by Henry Dannell, and career progression in management, both curated by the Career Development Committee. These sessions were designed to address practical concerns and future opportunities, integrating the role of technology and AI in enhancing professional practices.

Personal Stories and Life Coaching

Leanne Buckley-Thomson’s session on neurodivergence offered a personal perspective that resonated deeply with the audience, advocating for greater understanding and the removal of stigma. Additionally, Graham Smith, formerly deputy senior clerk at Old Square Chambers and now a renowned life coach, provided valuable life coaching insights that were well-received by the attendees.

Networking and Social Engagement

The conference wasn’t just about learning; it was also a great opportunity for networking. The day concluded with post-conference drinks, allowing attendees to socialise and discuss the day’s sessions in a relaxed setting. A pre-conference social event on Friday evening further fostered connections among professionals from various regions, enhancing the sense of community.
